South Africa´s Masters Team is ready for the 2008 ISA World Masters Surfing Championship
17 March 2008, San Diego, CA - The first edition of the annual ISA World Masters Surfing Championship, held in the surf of Puerto Rico in January, 2007, was won by the South Africa team that had four finalists in the three categories.
With the upcoming second edition of the Masters right around the corner, from March 29 until April 5, in the perfect waves of Punta Rocas, Peru, South Africans show themselves focused and fired up to repeat the spectacular campaign performed a year ago.
A series of trials were held to determine the “dream team” that will be in charge of defending the title. The following surfers were the winners, honoured to be part of the Springboks team that will represent South Africa in the one and only World Surfing Championship for surfers of over 35 years old:

2007 Kahunas World Masters Surfing Champion, Chris Knutsen who is now a Grand Kahuna and will be fighting to earn himself another World Title in the over 50 division.
With the inclusion of two new divisions, Grand Kahunas and Masters Women’s, South Africans did a lot of training to be in the best shape for the upcoming challenge, holding training camps and monitoring each surfers performance. Team Coach, Ant Brodowickz, told us: “South Africa is on a mission to defend the title and each surfer has been monitored individually by myself having identified strengths, weaknesses, if any, etc. All surfers have been training and working on their game and if I compare their standard of surfing that was displayed at our trials, the entire team has lifted their game 100%.”
A stoked Brodowickz also highlighted, “Last weekend, the team gathered for a team camp, as a Coach, I have never witnessed a more focused, amped and determined group of surfers in my life. We can’t wait to get over to Peru and sample some of their great waves, especially at Punta where Felipe Pomar won the World Title back in 65.”
The South African Masters Coach, ended saying, “To single out any new team members and to chat about them would take a mountain of time but let me say that their surfing will do the talking, we have some exciting new caps in our team. In fact this team is the best Masters team imaginable. Yes there is pressure but it's nothing we can’t handle and we will deal with things one day at a time or as and when things unravel.
From studying the break the boys can’t wait to light up Puntas Rocas because there is a break here called Nahoon Reef, that everyone loves to surf, and from what I’ve seen breaks almost like “Punta”. So it is our belief that the Peruvian waves will suit our surfers perfectly.”

Los campeones defensores están más que prontos para el Masters
El Equipo Sudafricano Master está listo para el World Masters Surfing Championship 2008
17 Marzo 2008, San Diego, CA - La primera edición del campeonato anual ISA World Masters Surfing Championship, realizado en excelentes olas de Puerto Rico en enero de 2007 fue vencido por un muy en forma equipo sudafricano, que tuvo cuatro finalistas en las tres divisiones disputadas.
Con la venidera segunda edición del Mundial Masters a la vuelta de la esquina, a ser realizada desde el 29 de marzo hasta el 5 de abril, en las perfectas olas de Punta Rocas, Perú, los sudáfricanos se muestran concentrados y encendidos para repetir la campaña espectacular realizada un año atrás.
Una serie de trials fueron realizados para definir el “dream team” que será responsable de defender el título. Los siguientes surfistas fueron los vencedores, honrados deportistas que son ahora parte del equipo de los Springboks, representando a Sudáfrica en el único campeonato mundial para surfistas mayores de 35 años:

Es interesante ver que el Campeón Mundial 2007 en la categoría Kahunas, Chris Knutsen es ahora un Grand Kahuna y estará peleando para llevarse el Título Mundial en la división de los mayores de 50 años.
Con la inclusión de dos divisiones nuevas, Grand Kahunas y Damas Masters, los sudafricanos llevaron adelante un montón de entrenamientos para estar en la mejor forma posible para el venidero evento, realizando campos de preparación y monitoreando la performance de cada surfista, el Entrenador del Equipo, Ant Brodowickz, nos dijo: “Sudáfrica tiene una misión: defender el título, y cada surfista ha sido monitoreado de forma individual por mí, habiendo identificado fortalezas y debilidades –si es que las hay-, etc. Todos los surfistas han estado entrenando y trabajando en lo suyo y si tengo que comparar su estándar de surfing durante los trials, todo el equipo ha aumentado su nivel al 100 por ciento”.
Un feliz Brodowickz también resaltó: “El fin de semana pasado el equipo se juntó para un campo de entrenamiento, como Coach, nunca en mi vida fui testigo de un equipo más concentrado, motivado y determinado en toda mi vida. Estamos ansiosos por llegar a Perú y demostrar en las excelentes olas, especialmente en Punta, donde Felipe Pomar venció el Mundial de 1965”.
El Entrenador del Equipo Sudafricano completó comentando: “El destacar las fortalezas de cada miembro del equipo y hablar sobre ellos llevaría un montón de tiempo, pero déjame decir que su surfing hablará por sí mismo, tenemos nuevos excelentes capitanes en nuestra selección. De hecho, éste equipo es el mejor equipo Master imaginable. Sí, hay presión, pero no es nada que nosotros no podamos manejar y nosotros vamos a lidiar con cada cosa día a día o cuando las cosas se presenten”.
Luego de estudiar el quiebre los “chicos” están ansiosos por llegar a Punta Rocas, porque hay un pico aquí, llamado Nahoon Reef, que todos aman surfear y por lo que he visto, quiebra casi como “Punta”. Por lo tanto, creemos que las olas peruanas se adaptarán a nuestro surfing de forma perfecta”.
