Surfing also included in the 2009 South American Beach Games

The waves will meet the Olympic Movement once again

29 July 2008, La Jolla, CA: The South American Sports Organization (ODESUR) announced that the inaugural South American Beach Games will take place from February 28th until March 8th in Montevideo and Punta del Este, Uruguay.

ODESUR President, Carlos Arthur Nuzman said: “The creation of the Beach Games shows that South America is aware on the global sports tendencies,” and this is why Surfing will be one of the sports held in the first edition of the event.

The announcement of the Uruguayan event came a few months after the great news of the inclusion of surfing in the inaugural Asian Bali Beach Games. This event that will take place in Indonesia will be held from October 18 until 25 –this was announced previously by the ISA (click here to find out)-.

This is another important step in the long journey towards building surfing as an Olympic Sport. Fernando Aguerre, President of the International Surfing Association, who started his quest in 1994, after years of hard work is seeing the benefits. He said: “One year ago, the ISA managed to introduce Surfing in the first Beach Games of the Olympic World. Now the ODESUR decision moves Surfing one step closer to the well deserved inclusion of the sport in the Summer Olympic Games and the Summer Youth Olympic Games. Duke Kahanamoku´s dream is one step closer.”

In the last year and a half, Aguerre has achieved a great deal of support from different personalities of the sports world for the inclusion of surfing in the above named games. The ISA has been working hard for the inclusion of Surfing in the Entertainment and Cultural Programs of the Singapore 2010 and London 2012 Games. This inclusion will count on the construction of wave parks that will remain as infrastructure of the host nations for years to come.

The Bolivarian Games also to be held in 2009 will include surfing as well. As in the Beach Games, the surfers will compete as part of their nation’s National Olympic Teams.

“The question is no longer if Surfing will be part of the Olympics but in which year this will happen”, ended Aguerre.

Las olas vuelven a unirse al Movimiento Olímpico

29 de julio de 2008, La Jolla, CA: La Organización Deportiva Suramericana (ODESUR) anunció la creación de los 1os Juegos Sudamericanos de Playa que se llevarán a cabo desde el 28 de febrero hasta el 8 de marzo en Montevideo y Punta del Este, Uruguay.

El Presidente de ODESUR, Carlos Arthur Nuzman estableció: “La realización de los Juegos de Playa demuestra que América del Sur está atenta a las tendencias del deporte mundial”, y por esto, el Surfing será uno de los deportes a ser disputados en la primera edición de la competencia.

El anuncio del evento en Uruguay vino unos meses luego de la novedad de los Juegos de Playa de Bali. Dicho evento que tendrá lugar en Indonesia será realizado desde el 18 hasta el 25 de octubre –esto fue anunciado previamente por la ISA (clickea aquí para saber más)-.

Se crea de esta forma otro paso importante en el largo camino que llevará al Surfing a convertirse en Deporte Olímpico. El Presidente de la International Surfing Association, Fernando Aguerre, quien comenzó dicho pasaje en 1994 y ahora está viendo los frutos de su arduo trabajo, comentó al respecto: “Hace un año la ISA logró introducir el surfing en los primeros Beach Games del mundo Olímpico. Ahora con la decisión de ODESUR, el Surfing da un nuevo paso hacia la muy merecida inclusión en los Juegos Olímpicos de Verano, y los Juegos Olímpicos de Verano de la Juventud. El sueño de Duke Kahanamoku, está un paso mas cerca”.

En el último año y medio Aguerre ha logrado el apoyo de numerosas personalidades del mundo deportivo para la inclusión del surfing en los juegos nombrados anteriormente. La ISA ha trabajado muy duro para la inclusión del Surfing en los programas Culturales y de Entretenimiento de los Juegos de Singapur 2010 y Londres 2012. Dicha inclusión constaría con la construcción de “wave parks”, que permanecerían como infraestructura de las naciones anfitrionas.

Los Juegos Bolivarianos, que igualmente serán realizados en el 2009 incluirán el surfing también. Como en los Juegos de Playa, los Surfistas competirán como parte del Equipo del Comité Olímpico Nacional.

“La pregunta no es si el surf será incluido en las Olimpíadas, sino en qué año esto sucederá”, finalizó Aguerre.
